How to lock/unlock the Mac automatically based on your iPhone’s proximity

Do you want to keep the data on your Mac away from other people (for example, at work, in the library, etc.)? Then it is necessary to lock the screen whenever you leave your desk. But to log off and log in you will need to enter the password every time and it is inconvenient. However, there is a simple solution, with the help of Near Lock app.

The Near Lock application works very simply. You just install the client for iOS (and / or watchOS) and OS X, and then whenever you move away from the Mac with the iPhone in your pocket or Apple Watch on your wrist, Near Lock locks the display and when you come back – unlocks. Communication between your smartphone/smart watch and the computer occurs via energy-efficient Bluetooth connection. That’s all!

User can adjust the distance when Mac should be locked/unlocked. For additional security, you can confirm the unlock with Touch ID on the iPhone (in 6s – with the help of 3D Touch) or from display of your Apple Watch. For iPhone there is also a widget that shows the locking status of Mac.

There are lots of features in the settings of the app. At the user’s request locked Mac can go to sleep mode and show the screen saver. Worth to mention about the notifications – if you want, on your iPhone or Watch, notifications will come every time whenever your Mac is locked or unlocked. You can also unlock your computer with an interactive notice – just swipe it to the left or via widget (you don’t have to be near to the Mac).

In addition, Near Lock allows you to control music – you can easily remotely close a running music player. It works not only with iTunes, but with popular music players such as Spotify, QuickTime, VLC, etc. The creator of this app also bothered about the users’ personal data protection – all information is stored on users’ devices and it is encrypted with AES encryption algorithm. Bluetooth connection is also protected by special encryption.

Near Lock clients for iPhone, Apple Watch and Mac are free, but to get all the features you will have to buy Pro Mode, which cost $4. However, over the next 3-4 days the developer offers all the features of the application for absolutely free. So, don’t miss your chance.

You can download Near Lock for iOS from the App Store.

Near Lock client for Mac is available on the official website of the application
