Apple buys Faceshift – startup of face recognition

The Swiss company specialized in the technology that allows you to create animated avatars and other figures that capture the expression of a person in real time was recently acquired by Apple.

Considering the technology, although it is not clear where is that Apple intends to apply it, but it was used in the popular World of Warcraft and more recently in the new Star Wars saga, that premiered in theaters worldwide. Although, the technology has been used primarily in the areas of Marketing and Advertising, though the newspaper say it has also been tested in medicine to assess pain.

The Faceshift was created by two scholars from laboratory of Graphics and Geometry computational of the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne, Switzerland. Interestingly, until August of the last year, two of the main patents of Faceshift were in the hands of the University.

As usual, the business values have been obscured and Apple made its usual statement of “The Apple buys smaller technology companies from time to time and, by habit, are not discussing motives and plans”.
